Almost two years ago I was looking for a new phone and found a nice Motorola for a fair price. I tend to drop my phones a lot so in a few months the screen broke and I found myself looking for a replacement. As it turned out, there are no OEM parts and any other options costs almost as much as the new phone. So, I decided to buy the same phone, it still was a very good option.
I’m very happy about that choice, last night my phone’s camera stopped working (yes, I dropped it) and since nowadays it’s impossible to get something fixed I started to feel the pressure of finding a new phone. But then I remembered the old phone stored in a drawer full of other hopeless electronic devices. Luckily, I know my way around screws and managed to disassemble the old phone to get the little camera out of it and replace it in the other phone.
Thousands of devices are being thrown away or just stored because their lifetime seems to be over, when really they might be fixed without too much effort. Companies are forcing us into a model where nothing is easily repairable and replacement parts are too expensive to even think about it. As customers is our responsibility to buy new devices consciously, thinking about the long-term impact they have on our planet.
This phone will continue to capture the world and share it only because of his brother’s donation and my denial of bringing another phone into the family, others won’t have the same fate.
